Project 2 – How to Bake a Cake

My biggest problem with this project was during the editing process. Trying to make the clips transition smoothly from one to the next was pretty difficult and cutting all of our footage down to below 4 minutes was nearly impossible (and took a long time).  The biggest success was that the final film actually achieved what we set out to do, which was to show viewers how to bake a cake. Despite the challenges, we were still able to produce a short film that shows all the steps necessary to bake a cake and frost it. In terms of inspiring future projects, this project taught me how to film a sequential process and how to organize clips in a logical manner, so that the end result communicates the whole process to viewers. This can also be applied to other films that do not necessarily have to do with processes. Having some experience organizing clips in a logical order will be helpful with many different projects moving forward. When we decided to bake a cake for our project we wanted our film to emulate a cooking show, like the ones seen on the Food Network. We wanted it to be straight forward, instructional, but lighthearted and fun, so that anybody watching could copy the steps and have a good time baking a cake all on their own.

Project 2 – Rough Cut

I guess this is what they call a rooooough cut. I’m not sure why the video is so blurry because it doesn’t look like that on final cut pro, but that’s something I’ll fix before the final version is due next week.

Exercise 1

Christen Picoli

This was my first time ever using Final Cut Pro. I had a few set backs, but it wasn’t too difficult or confusing if I followed the handouts and my notes from class. I’m sure by the end of the semester I’ll laugh at the quality of my editing in this video, but for now I’m just pretty proud that I was able to edit a 49 second clip. I was pretty successful in figuring out the program on my own and I only ran into a few problems that required outside help, whether it was from other students in the editing room or from Professor Negin. During the exercise I didn’t use many of the keystroke shortcuts, but as I get more comfortable with the program I hope to use them more consistently, which in turn will shorten the amount of time I need to spend editing. In terms of how we captured the interviews a few things could be improved for next time. First, there was a lot of background noise on the audio and in several of my clips the other group’s interviews could be heard. Secondly, I chose not to use some interviews because there was a lot of camera movement, so maybe if we use a tripod next time we could reduce this problem. Lastly, in one of my interviews there was a large space between the persons head and the top of the camera frame, while the other two looked fine. Maybe next time we can make more of an effort to be uniform in terms of framing the shot. Overall, I’m proud of my video since two weeks ago I didn’t even know what Final Cut Pro was, let alone know how to edit a video, and now, at least I know the basics.
